INTENT

Our intent is to prepare children for a rapidly changing world by developing mathematical, systematic, and logical thinking. Mathematics is an integral part of everyday life, and we aim to ensure pupils understand its importance and application.

Objectives:

• · Equip pupils with the tools to become fluent in number, supporting strong problem-solving and reasoning skills.
• · Provide opportunities to inspire mathematical minds and develop rich mathematical vocabulary, embedding our FLAME values such as excellence and learning.
• · Foster independence by developing children who are inquisitive, creative, numerically literate, confident, and financially responsible.
• · Create a stimulating learning environment with a wide range of concrete resources to help every child reach their full mathematical potential.

IMPLEMENTATION

To champion the development of fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving, we’ve opted for the highly regarded White Rose Scheme of Learning. This choice wasn’t made lightly—its carefully sequenced topics align beautifully with the priorities shared by colleagues, and the resources themselves are exceptional, placing a strong emphasis on fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving.

The nationally recognised White Rose scheme is implemented across KS1 and KS2, offering the right balance of challenge and support for every learner, all while preparing them thoroughly for KS2 SATs. At the heart of every lesson is 10-Minute Maths, a simple yet powerful routine that helps pupils revisit prior learning and strengthen their fluency.

We’ve also introduced Times Tables Rock Stars, which transforms practice into an exciting experience through fun, competitive challenges that inspire children to master their times tables with confidence.

Lessons are thoughtfully adapted to meet all needs, enabling pupils to explore, develop, secure, and extend their understanding. Some sessions focus on fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving within a single stage, while others guide pupils through all four stages—ensuring a rich, balanced curriculum that supports learners at every level.

This year, we’ve placed a strong emphasis on mathematical vocabulary, encouraging pupils to think deeply and articulate their ideas clearly. Sentence stems have been

introduced to spark meaningful dialogue and promote higher-order thinking across the classroom.

 

IMPACT

The impact of our mathematics curriculum is that children understand the relevance and importance of what they are learning and recognise that maths is a vital life skill they will rely on in many areas of daily life.

Children develop a positive view of mathematics because they learn in an environment where maths is promoted as exciting and enjoyable, encouraging investigation and questioning. They understand that making mistakes is part of learning and helps strengthen their understanding.

Our pupils are confident to ‘have a go’, selecting the equipment and strategies they feel best suit each problem. Their maths books show work of a high standard, demonstrating pride and clear evidence of fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving.

Feedback and interventions support children to strive to be the best mathematicians they can be, while promoting the ethos that they are capable, resilient, and eager to succeed.
