Our Curriculum Intent

At St Michael’s Church School, we believe that reading is the key that unlocks all learning. Our English curriculum is designed to ensure that every child becomes a confident, fluent reader and a thoughtful, articulate communicator.

Rooted in our FLAME values, our approach to English and reading goes beyond basic skills. We aim to nurture a genuine love of language, stories and ideas, giving children the tools they need to succeed both in school and in the wider world.

Friendship
We use high-quality texts to help children understand themselves and others. Through shared reading, discussion and storytelling, pupils develop empathy, respect and an appreciation of different perspectives. Reading becomes something to enjoy together, building connection as well as understanding.

Learning
We provide a carefully structured journey from early phonics through to fluent, independent reading. Children build their knowledge step by step, developing strong decoding skills, rich vocabulary and secure comprehension. Writing is closely linked to reading, enabling pupils to apply what they learn with increasing confidence and independence.

Action
We encourage children to use their reading and writing to express their ideas and make a difference. Whether writing to inform, persuade or entertain, pupils learn that their voice matters. They are given meaningful opportunities to communicate for real purposes and audiences.

Manners
We place a strong emphasis on spoken language and respectful communication. Children are taught to listen carefully, speak clearly and present their ideas with thought and consideration. These skills underpin both their writing and their wider development.

Excellence
We have high expectations for every child. Through consistent, high-quality teaching, we ensure that all pupils make strong progress from their starting points. We are ambitious for every child to leave St Michael’s as a confident reader who can access the full curriculum and engage with the world beyond school.
