Parental Resources/Remote Education

When schools use remote education

Remote education in schools refers to teaching and learning that take place when pupils and teachers are not physically together in a classroom. It is typically used when students cannot attend school in person due to circumstances such as illness, emergencies, or school closures.

In England, guidance from the Department for Education outlines that remote education should provide pupils with access to a broad and balanced curriculum, helping them to continue their learning as closely as possible to normal classroom teaching. This may include a combination of live online lessons, recorded teaching, digital resources, and independent work.

Overall, remote education is intended to be a temporary and flexible solution that supports pupils’ progress while maintaining engagement, routine, and access to learning, until they can return to in-school education.

Importantly, it is considered a last resort, not a replacement for normal school attendance.
