Preparation for starting school

Building Self-Help Skills for Starting School

Here are some practical ways you can support your child as they prepare for school:

  • Practice dressing and undressing independently, including fastening and unfastening shoes.
  • Use the toilet on their own as much as possible.
  • Learn to use a knife and fork confidently to feed themselves.
  • Enjoy listening to short stories and join in with familiar nursery rhymes.
  • Ask an adult for help when needed and follow simple instructions.
  • Recognise their own name when spoken or written.
  • Wash and dry hands properly without assistance.
  • Put on their coat independently and have a go at fastening it.
