Building Self-Help Skills for Starting School
Here are some practical ways you can support your child as they prepare for school:
- Practice dressing and undressing independently, including fastening and unfastening shoes.
- Use the toilet on their own as much as possible.
- Learn to use a knife and fork confidently to feed themselves.
- Enjoy listening to short stories and join in with familiar nursery rhymes.
- Ask an adult for help when needed and follow simple instructions.
- Recognise their own name when spoken or written.
- Wash and dry hands properly without assistance.
- Put on their coat independently and have a go at fastening it.
